COURSE DESCRIPTION

EH 102 provides training in expository writing, especially critical analysis, argumentation, and research. This course is a continuation of English 101. Prerequisite: English 101. Anyone who chooses to enroll in this course is responsible for ensuring that he or she has fulfilled all prerequisites. English 101 and 102 or English 103-104 are prerequisite to all advanced courses in English, except by special permission of the Dean. Credit: three semester hours.

COURSE OBJECTIVES

English 101 is a written composition course designed to effect in the student:

• a knowledge of and an ability to use standard American English as well as an awareness of non-standard dialects;
• a knowledge of grammar, organization, structure, and choice of dialect that will allow him or her to write effectively to a variety of audiences, on a variety of occasions, for a variety of purposes;
• a knowledge of different patterns of expository writing, including critical analysis, argument, and persuasion;
• an ability to impose logical and critical thinking on and to weigh facts, implications, inferences, and judgments in both literary and non-literary writing;
• an ability to exercise this knowledge and these skills in a group context through class discussion and group critiques.
