Critical Reading Tips
Take notes in the margins, or in a notebook as you go
Ask:
- who is the audience
- what do I know about the author
- how does this work fit in the context of other works
- compare/contrast/connect to other works
- themes/sub themes
- purpose/why is he writing about this topic
- your opinion about the work and why
- how has the work changed your thinking or world view
- what is the significance of the title
The more you read, the better you get at this.
- annotate as you read
- summarize
- connect
- respond
- review
- expand your vocabulary/look up unknown words
