Nine Tips for Interviewing
What is your (the publication’s) intention and desired outcome for the story?
Location, Location, Location—Accentuate familiarity, eliminate discomfort
Prepare, Prepare, Prepare - Have questions prepared in advance and then follow the interview. Remember a good interview involves establishing rapport.
Practice, Practice, Practice—Don't just assume you are a skilled interviewer. Take time to practice with friends, colleagues, etc.
Work on the art of making connections.
If recording, realize that this may create barriers for you during the interview.
Listen
Don't rush- Give individuals time to think. Don't try to fill all the awkward pauses. It's okay to let your interviewee have think time.
Be honorable.
Remember: you get one chance to get everything you need—Be prepared
Prepare at least 20+ questions, arrange in order
Arrange interview through SID
Schedule ahead, so you make your deadline
Establish rapport by discussing unrelated topics
Find common ground—helps them relax
Ask permission to record for quotation accuracy
Assure them you plan to portray them in the best light possible
